Delicate gilt flowers and scrolling foliage encircle the rounded body, complemented by gold bands at the shoulder, mouth, and stopper.

Pick it up and you feel the difference. This is lead-crystal opaline, noticeably heavy in the hand, and it gives a clear ring when tapped... the two tells that separate the great French houses from the lighter Bohemian glass that imitated them. The underside retains the ground and polished pontil associated with hand-finished period production, while gentle wear to the gilding speaks to its age and history of use.

French opaline reached its artistic height during the first half of the 19th century. Manufactories including Saint-Louis and Baccarat became celebrated for richly colored opaque crystal in shades ranging from turquoise and lapis blue to the particularly desirable pinks and roses.

A wonderful survivor from the golden age of French opaline, preserved with its original stopper more than a century and a half later.

Details

Attributed to: Cristallerie de Saint-Louis

Origin: France

Period: Louis-Philippe to early Second Empire, circa 1840–1855

Material: Rose-pink lead-crystal opaline with hand-gilt decoration; heavy, with a clear ring when tapped

Height: 10 inches, including stopper

Color note: A true rose pink in daylight.
