The exterior is veneered in beautifully figured thuya burl, honey and chestnut, with a gently domed lid edged in a darker band. Open it and the inside is a complete surprise: the lid is upholstered in deeply buttoned red silk, like a tiny tufted settee, and the base is lined to match.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe key is present with a pink silk tassel. The proportions are what make this box so useful: it is the right length for long gloves, but also for pens, letters, watches, bracelets or a row of small treasures.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGlove boxes were a standard part of the French dressing table in the second half of the nineteenth century, sold alongside matching jewel and handkerchief boxes.
