An exceptional antique English jewelry box dating to 1912, crafted in sterling silver by the celebrated Birmingham silversmiths Deakin & Francis and beautifully finished with an intricately decorated tortoiseshell lid.
The petite oval box rests upon three graceful scrolling feet, giving the piece an elegant presence despite its intimate scale. The lid is the true focal point, displaying the rich amber and deep brown coloration characteristic of tortoiseshell and embellished with delicate silver piqué inlay. Fine scrolling foliage, floral motifs and suspended garlands create an extraordinarily detailed composition across the surface.
Piqué was a specialized decorative technique in which precious metal was carefully inset into tortoiseshell, creating a striking contrast between the luminous silver decoration and the richly mottled material beneath. Particularly associated with fine luxury objects and personal accessories, surviving examples are now highly collectible.
The silver is fully hallmarked, including the D&F maker’s mark for Deakin & Francis, Birmingham anchor, lion passant denoting sterling silver, and the lowercase “n” date letter for 1912. Corresponding silver marks are also present on the lid mount.
Founded in Birmingham in 1786, Deakin & Francis is one of England’s historic silversmithing houses, with a tradition extending across more than two centuries.
The hinged lid opens to reveal its original softly lined interior, retaining the wonderful character and gentle signs of use expected from a personal object more than a century old.
A beautiful example of early 20th-century English craftsmanship and a true antique objet de vertu, equally suited to a collection of English silver or displayed on a dressing table for jewelry and other small treasures.
