Antique French Cobalt Blue & Gilt Bronze Louis XVI Revival Vase, c. 1880–1900

A striking late 19th-century French decorative vase, beautifully executed in a deep cobalt blue and richly mounted with finely cast gilt bronze ornament in the Louis XVI taste.

The elegant baluster-form body is enveloped by an exceptionally decorative arrangement of classical French mounts. Delicate floral garlands are suspended from ribbon-tied bows around the body, while additional swags encircle the neck. Laurel and foliate borders finish the upper rim and circular foot, creating a wonderful contrast between the saturated cobalt ground and warm, aged gilding.

The design belongs to the great Sèvres Revival tradition of late 19th-century France, when makers looked to the celebrated royal porcelain and decorative arts of the 18th century for inspiration. The ribbon bows, floral swags, laurel borders and symmetrical ornament are particularly characteristic of the Louis XVI vocabulary.

The underside is enclosed by its original mount, preventing examination of the ceramic base for a possible maker’s mark. For this reason, the piece is offered as French, Sèvres style, rather than attributed to the Manufacture de Sèvres.

Beautifully scaled at approximately 8.5” tall, this is a jewel-like piece that brings the unmistakable richness of French cobalt and gilt decoration to a mantel, cabinet or collected interior.
