Antique French Gilt Bronze Ribbon Bow Photo Frame with Round Aperture and Period Portrait, c. 1890–1910
A classic French bow frame, and a particularly pretty one. The square gilt frame is crowned with a cast ribbon bow and laurel swags in the Louis XVI manner, the border is cast with a running leaf-and-berry band, and the circular aperture is finished with a beaded gilt bezel against a bone colored mount.
It still holds its original photograph: two little girls in matching white coats and wide-brimmed hats, standing side by side, a lovely image in its own right. We have left it in place; it lifts out easily if you would rather frame a photograph of your own. A folding easel strut at the back lets the frame stand on a desk or chest of drawers.
Bow-crested frames like this were made in Paris around the turn of the 20th century and are among the most sought-after small frames for a collected dressing table or a frame wall.
