Antique French Thuya Burl Box with Lift-Out Tray
A handsome burl box with a surprise inside. The whole exterior is veneered in richly figured burl, the kind of swirling, honey-to-chestnut grain that only comes from the root of the thuya tree, set off by crisp ebonized bands along every edge. The lid lifts on brass hinges to show a matching burl panel on the inside of the lid and a fitted tray that lifts out, divided into open compartments, with the plain wood box beneath for larger things.
The key is present with a cream silk tassel. The form is simple and architectural, which lets the wood do the talking, and it reads just as well in a modern room as in a traditional one.
Thuya burl was one of the prized veneers of nineteenth century Paris, imported from North Africa and used for the best boxes, cases and small furniture. A box like this would have sat on a writing table or dressing table and been used every day.
