Antique Gilt Metal Jeweled Crown on Velvet Cushion Comes with Original Bag
(Cushion Sold Separately)
This one feels like it came straight out of a chapel treasury. A pierced gilt metal crown, set all around with red, blue and clear paste stones, rises in acanthus leaf arches to a gilt orb topped with a small jeweled cross. The band is a lovely openwork of quatrefoils and rosettes, with more stones set at intervals, and stamped flower heads with clear stones sit between the arches.
Crowns of this type were made to adorn devotional statues, most often of the Madonna and Child, and are a favorite of collectors of religious and ecclesiastical decorative arts.
A captivating piece of French religious history, reflecting the artistry, craftsmanship, and devotion of a bygone era.
