A distinctive Wedgwood jasperware commemorative dish created in 1988 to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Lloyd’s of London, 1688–1988.

Produced in a particularly beautiful sea green jasperware, the dish features crisp white applied relief centered by the historic Lloyd’s coat of arms. Maritime imagery reflects the institution’s origins in shipping and marine insurance, while the surrounding border is decorated with repeating interlocking “L” motifs representing Lloyd’s.

The reverse bears the commemorative inscription “Lloyd’s of London 1688 1988 Tercentenary,” documenting the occasion for which the piece was produced.

Lloyd’s traces its origins to Edward Lloyd’s coffee house in late 17th-century London, where merchants, shipowners, and others involved in maritime commerce gathered to exchange shipping intelligence and arrange insurance. By 1988, the institution had reached its remarkable 300th anniversary.

The unusual sea green ground gives this example a particularly striking appearance and provides a beautiful contrast to Wedgwood’s finely modeled white relief.
